60th Anniversary Celebration

Plan to join in the celebration of Altadore’s  60th anniversary as we gather together to praise God for all the work He has done through Altadore and look forward to what He has in store for the ministry of Altadore Baptist Church in the future.

Our celebration will include a banquet on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday morning Worship service on December 1, followed by birthday cake.

Tim & Mary Dickau will be our special guests and Tim will speak at the banquet and on Sunday morning.   Tim and Mary were members of Altadore in the 80’s.  Tim is currently the Pastor of Grandview Calvary Baptist Church in Vancouver where he has served for 24 years.   When Tim and Mary first went to Grandview, the church was struggling but since he became Pastor, the church has started many new initiatives in response to their neighbours, many of whom live below the poverty line.   In speaking about Grandview, Jeremy Bell, Executive Minister of Canadian Baptists of Western Canada (CBWC) says, “Grandview’s leaders have been the most creative group of people applying energy to a multitude of issues.”   Tim’s main areas of teaching are justice, urban mission and community development.

Tickets for the banquet will go on sale October 27.

Membership Orientation Lunch

There will be a Membership Orientation Lunch for any adults who presently attend Altadore Baptist Church who may be interested in becoming members. We believe that membership is an important decision, as it confers both rights and obligations.  Therefore, it is our custom to provide interested people with an opportunity to learn more about our church before taking this step.

Membership is available to baptized Christian adults who understand and affirm our church's beliefs and practices. Attendance at a membership orientation event is a pre-requisite for membership.

Date:  Sunday, November 17
Time and place:  Following the Sunday morning church service
In the front lounge of the church

Please call the church office or talk to Wendy B. if you would be interested in attending.

SINGING WITH ANGELS: Prayer in the Dead Sea Scrolls

With Dr. Daniel K. Falk

Why did Jews begin to pray together daily? Prayer as regularized service of the community is one of the profound contributions of Judaism to western civilization, but the origins of Jewish liturgy remain obscure. The most important evidence is to be found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, which include the earliest known collections of Jewish liturgical prayers. Falk explores the significance of these prayers for understanding the distinctive religious life of these particular sectarians, who joined the angels in worship of God and warfare against dark forces, and in their prayer sought to harmonize with God’s created order and rectify disorder. Falk also reflects on what these texts reveal of trends in early Jewish prayer and piety more broadly.

Care Group Lunches

...they ate together with gland and sincere hearts - Acts 2:46b, speaking of the first Christians

Care groups are a way of breaking the church into smaller informal groups where you can get to know others within our church. Our hope is that over time and through various formal and informal gatherings  a greater sense of community will develop within these groups, that you will seek each other out, listen to each other, care and pray for each other. We have attempted to put all individuals/couples or families in the church into a Care Group. Over the next two months, there will be 3 Care Group lunches following the Sunday church service. You will receive an invitation in your church mailbox for the lunch for your Care Group. We encourage you to attend this lunch. There will be no cost to you, it will not be long and children are invited, also. It is mainly just a chance for you to visit, over lunch, with others in your Care Group. Please let the Elder in charge of your lunch know if you can attend.

You should have received a letter from the Elder responsible for your Care group this summer but if you don't remember or are curious about which Care Group you are part of, check it out on the Elders' Information Board in the gym. If you are not included on a list, please speak to any of the Elders (listed below) and we will put you into one of the Care Groups.

We look forward to seeing you at the lunch for your Care Group:

  • Oct 20 - Dave L's Care Groups
  • Nov. 3 - Wendy B's Care Groups
