Leadership Update

Facilities

We want to thank Glenn O for his years in leading our Facilities Ministry Team. We generally don’t notice things about our building when everything is running well. When something isn’t working we notice it right away. Thanks to you, Glenn, and the rest of your team for your service in quietly keeping our facility running.

We want to welcome Wayne B to lead our Facilities Ministry Team. Wayne has already been involved with the new lighting in the gym last year and recently running network wiring to our sound booth in the balcony and to the basement.

Thanks Glenn, welcome Wayne.

Elders

Please note that Wendy B will now be co-chairing the Elders alongside Nada R

Altadore Family Meeting

Sunday, November 9th at 7 pm

By now you will hopefully have seen the “Update” I’ve written regarding big decisions we are thinking about. If you haven’t received a copy please ask Wendy in the office to

As you think about the three options (Maintaining the Status Quo, Spreading the Seed, or Re-Birth) may I encourage you to take the time to talk to God and listen to him. As Richard Trench, Archbishop of Dublin has stated, “prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance, it is laying hold of his willingness.”

The meeting on November 9th will be an opportunity to deepen our understanding about these options and to ask questions. If you are unable to attend, please provide your comments/feedback to Council prior to Nov. 9th

Blessings, Pastor Paul

Thanksgiving Offering 2014

The Outreach Team at Altadore has a tradition of promoting a special offering each Thanksgiving. This year, the Outreach Ministry Team has chosen to support Calgary Meals on Wheels and their part in a new pilot project: the Integrated School Support Project. This project provides holistic support aimed at increasing the chances of social and academic success for students and their families at two Calgary elementary schools. It will include a positive Calgary Police Service presence, an on-site psychologist, a physical education specialist, access to social workers and health clinicians, breakfast and lunch programs, and after school programs with a focus on mentoring and tutoring. There are 15 community partners involved including Calgary Police Service, City of Calgary Community and Neighbourhood Services, Calgary Public Library, YMCA Calgary and Meals on Wheels.

To find out more, read this CTV News Article.

For the month of October donations can be placed in the offering plate. Please make cheques out to Altadore Baptist Church and designate Meals on Wheels.

Small Group Ladies Bible Study

Are you interested in attending a ladies Bible study at Altadore? The fall session will be a Character Study of Two Women in the Christmas Story - Elizabeth & Mary.

This will hopefully bless you and prepare you for Advent and Christmas in a new way. Study materials will be provided to participants. We will meet Wednesdays in the library from 1 to 3:

  • November 12 - Elizabeth (Jesus' Aunt)
  • November 26 - Mary (Jesus' Mother)
  • December 12 - DVD

We will resume near the end of January with studies to prepare us for Lent. If you have questions or plan to attend, please contact Jill M

Fall Clean-up at Altadore

Here are a few of things that would be nice to clean up before the snow flies!

  • There are a large number of empty planters beside the shed on the east side of the church. Please take home any you can re-use or recycle, otherwise they will be thrown away.
  • Now that the city uses the black bins, we no longer need the old wooden garbage can pen on the south side of the church. If someone could take on cleaning this out and dsmantling it, we’d sure appreciate getting rid of this eyesore!
  • The four square cream-upholstered armchairs that are in the lounge need a new home (they came from a room above the library). If someone could arrange to take or donate them; otherwise or they will be thrown away .
  • The two blue wooden square planters by the doors are leaking and badly staining the concrete. They will be thrown away once the flowers die unless someone would like to take them home.
  • The brass mailbox needs to be cleaned up and spray painted white or replaced with a good quality white metal mailbox. We’d love for someone to take this project on!
  • The marble church dedication sign needs to have the letters darkened so they can be read again. If anyone knows of someone who does this kind of specialized work, please have them contact the office.

Prayer Requests for Lebanon

Please pray the following for Lebanese Baptists:

  • The continuous influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon. Pray for their needs, particularly for the thousands of school-aged children that are out of school; and the implications of that on their safety, and future.
  • Christian Iraqi refugees in Lebanon, who though are “a drop in the ocean in comparison with Syrian refugees in Lebanon”, still have critical needs that are yet to be addressed.
  • The November program for Syrian refugee children.
  • Their Relief Consultation in November. Pray for God’s guidance and wisdom as they think through with their partners the way forward vis-à-vis the Syria crisis.
  • The security situation in their region.

Update from the True Vine School

The church recently received an  newsletter from the True Vine School in Zahle, Lebanon. The newsletter talks about what they and others are doing in developing Child Friendly Spaces.  If you are interested in either supporting this initiative in donation or short term mission trip, please contact the church office. For more information on this ministry see the Lebanon section on the Outreach page.

Growing in worship

Dear Congregation,

As we move into the fall months here at ABC I desire to see our church grow and develop in our experience of worship. Our services are a special time for our congregation and I find myself pondering various aspects of what happens on a Sunday morning. I want to be increasingly purposeful in how our services are put together and what our objectives are for each part of worship. This means that each service will possibly have unique elements that haven't been tried before. So I encourage you not to be afraid of change, but be open to new innovations as we explore how God might be leading us in the area of corporate worship. I invite your prayers, thoughts and suggestions on this important aspect of our church life as we look for ways that we might grow.

Sincerely,

Christy Guenter

Worship Director, Altadore Baptist Church
